Three candle tins repurposed as a tiny planter, jewelry holder, and travel keepsake tin

Reuse Your Candle Tins: Creative Ways to Upcycle Your Vessels

At Illume Blends, we love finding ways to give beautiful things a longer life. When your candle burns down to the end, the story doesn’t have to stop there. Here are our favorite ways to give your candle tins a second life.

Why Upcycling Matters

Every tin that gets repurposed is one less piece of waste headed to a landfill. With a little creativity, your empty candle vessel can become something just as beautiful and functional as what it started as. Handpoured. Repurposed. Loved again.

🌱 Tiny Planter

Add a layer of small rocks for drainage, fill with potting soil, and pop in a succulent, herb, or trailing plant. Your windowsill has never looked better — and your candle tin has never been more alive.

💍 Jewelry Holder

The lid makes a perfect catch-all for rings, earrings, and delicate pieces. Keep it on your vanity or nightstand as a chic, minimal jewelry dish that carries a little scent memory too.

🗺️ Travel Keepsake Tin

Tuck in ticket stubs, pressed flowers, a handwritten note, or small mementos from a trip. The compact size makes it perfect for keepsakes that deserve a beautiful home.

Other Ideas to Try

  • Desk organizer — store paper clips, rubber bands, or small office supplies
  • Makeup brush holder — perfect for lip liners and eyeliners
  • Matches & striker tin — refill with long matches for your next candle
  • Gift tin — fill with chocolates, lip balm, or a mini candle and gift it forward

How to Clean Your Tin

Before repurposing your tin, you'll want to remove any remaining wax. Here are a few methods depending on what you have on hand:

❄️ Freeze & Scoop (No Heat)

Place the tin in the freezer for 1–2 hours. Once the wax has hardened and contracted, use a spoon or butter knife to pop and scoop it right out. Clean, easy, and no heat required.

🥄 Scoop It Out (No Heat)

If there's only a small amount of wax left, simply use a spoon to scoop it out at room temperature. Best when there's minimal residue remaining.

Once the wax is removed by any method, wash the tin with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. That’s it — ready for its next chapter.
