How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

Get the Most Out of Every Candle
There's nothing quite like lighting a beautifully scented candle to set the mood in your home. But are you getting the most burn time out of every candle you love? With a few simple habits, you can significantly extend the life of your candles — and enjoy a cleaner, more fragrant burn every time.
1. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
This is the single most important thing you can do for your candle. Before each lighting, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6mm). A properly trimmed wick burns slower and more evenly, prevents black soot from forming on the jar, and eliminates that mushroom-shaped carbon buildup that causes flickering and smoking.
Use a wick trimmer, small scissors, or even a nail clipper. Make it a ritual — trim before you light, every time.
2. Let the Wax Pool Reach the Edges on the First Burn
Candle wax has memory. The first time you light a new candle, allow it to burn until the entire surface has melted to the edges of the container — this usually takes 2–4 hours depending on the candle's diameter. If you extinguish it too early, the wax will "tunnel" downward and never burn evenly again, wasting a significant portion of your candle.
3. Follow the 4-Hour Rule
For safety and longevity, never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Beyond that point, the wick can become too long, the heat can affect the fragrance throw, and the glass container can overheat. Let the candle cool for at least 2 hours before relighting.
4. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts
Drafts from open windows, fans, or air vents cause uneven burning and excessive flickering, which leads to soot deposits and a shorter burn time. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from air movement for a clean, even burn.
5. Store Candles Properly
When not in use, keep your candles covered (most come with lids — use them!) and stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the color of wax and degrade fragrance over time. Proper storage keeps your candles ready to perform beautifully whenever you reach for them.
6. Stop Burning When ½ Inch of Wax Remains
Always discontinue use when about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container. Burning past this point can cause the container to overheat, potentially cracking the glass. The candle has done its job — at this point, it's time to repurpose or recycle the jar.
